Jim VanSteenhouse – The Bear Man
In September 2015, Jim was doing what he loved. It was the way he recharged his batteries. For him, bagging a trophy bull moose was never the real goal. It was the challenge of the hunt that mattered; pitting his wits and knowledge against an animal that can outsmart the best of bow hunters ninety-nine percent of the time.
Deep in the woods of Northern Canada he and his guide had been stalking moose for days, but never close enough for a shot. With a high-powered rifle, you can down an unsuspecting bull moose from half a mile or more. But with shaking hands and adrenaline coursing through your veins, a fifty-yard shot with a bow can seem impossible.
Day three, focused on the hunt, Jim was unaware that he was the one being stalked until he saw the look on his guides face and heard him utter the word, bear!
Jim turned his head and looked over his right shoulder. An eight-hundred pound grizzly was staring him down. A split second later he was being mauled.
Listen to Jim as he tells his harrowing story on the Family and Stories podcast. “Jim Vansteenhouse, The Bear Man.”
